Hi friends, More Information on the Blister Beatle
I just got some bad news I felt compelled to pass on as a “public service warning” heads up. Folks who had just adopted two donkeys from Lucky 13 Donkey Rescue (Barb & Barry White) called to tell them that the two donkeys—2 yrs. and 5 yrs.—and their 3 yr. old Arab died today after ingesting blister beetle infested alfalfa hay from Western Mercantile. All three equines became deathly ill shortly after eating the hay, the owners called out the vet, but even after several hours of valiant effort none could be saved. The vet asked to see the hay and whole blister beetles were found and confirmed. As many of you know, even portions of blister beetles are known to be fatally toxic to equines and other hay consumers.
The vet was diligent in photographing the partially eaten hay, and Western Mercantile was contacted regarding the situation. They stated that all of the hay had been sold and were unable to do anything. If anyone has purchased alfalfa recently from them PLEASE be extra vigilant when feeding. Naturally, this can occur with hay grown and purchased many places and it behooves each one of us to always remember to be careful when feed ANYTHING from ANYWHERE. However, since this is a fully documented case of potentially fatally contaminated hay and the store is apparently unable to warn customers of the danger, please be aware and stay alert; hopefully other deaths can be averted.
With heavy heart, our condolences to the family who lost their beloved herd in a few agonizing hours. Blessings to all.
